One of the things that saddens me most is that the majority of families who come to work with me are expecting their second baby.

Not because they’re more deserving of support.

But because their first birth left them feeling like something was missing.

For thousands of years, women rarely gave birth alone.

Across cultures and generations, there was often someone whose sole purpose was to support the woman.

A wise woman.

A birth keeper.

A guide.

Not to take control.

Not to make decisions for her.

But to offer reassurance, experience, calm and unwavering support while birth unfolded.

That role still exists today.

It’s called a doula.

Contrary to popular belief, my role isn’t about encouraging one type of birth over another.

It’s about helping you understand what’s happening, protecting your space, supporting your nervous system, helping your birth partner feel confident, and reminding you that your voice matters.

Sometimes that means encouraging patience.

I trusted the wisdom that was passed onto me- but not blindly. I did my research, it made sense and I made an informed decision.

Not because it was going to promise me the perfect birth.

Not because it was going to make the pain less so.

Not because it would shorten labour.

But because I wanted to help my body prepare for what was to come and I had nothing to lose trying.

Movement is key in labour, but it’s also something that is mostly disregarded during pregnancy. Your pelvis is so important in helping your baby get into a position that helps you both during labour and birth so it’s important to keep that momentum going during pregnancy to prepare your body for what is to come.

We have birth balls, peanut balls and so many other resources but once upon a time, wise women encouraged an expectant mother to move and do deep physical activities that encouraged her body and pelvis to move in a way which helped her and her baby for labour and birth.

And if we just look at our cushiony life with mostly sit down jobs, soft padded sofa’s and always told to rest and do the minimum- well who is that really helping?

Movement looks different nowadays and it’s important to know that by working with your body in multiple ways to work with the relaxin hormone, it can support your journey.

Whether that’s physical work at home, pregnancy yoga, aqua-natal or other supported exercises that keeps your pelvis moving- get on it! Your baby will thank you.

P.S. yes there are babies who do not change positions for reasons unbeknown to us- and this is where your plan B, C, D take effect.

And if your care provider doesn’t know biomechanics to aid you before offering medical interventions- I think you need to seriously reevaluate your support.

One of the first questions I ask every family is:

“What does safety mean to you?”

Not where do you want to give birth.

Not whether you’re planning a home birth or a hospital birth.

But what does feeling safe actually mean for you?

Because safety isn’t one-size-fits-all.

For some women, it’s knowing emergency care is close by.

For others, it’s continuity of care, being listened to, dim lighting, freedom to move, or having time to make informed decisions without feeling rushed.

The problem is that many of us have been taught what safety should look like, without ever stopping to ask ourselves what it actually feels like.

When you understand what safety means to you, your decisions become clearer.

Not because someone else told you what the “right” choice was.

But because your choices are aligned with your values, your circumstances and your instincts.

The calm wasn’t in the room. The calm was in her.

She planned a home birth.

Instead, she gave birth in hospital.

It wasn’t because she’d “failed.”

Once I found this out I have been obsessed with asking women I work with if they have ever spoken to their grandmothers/ great grandmothers about their birth experiences.

Those I have prompted to do so have told me how surprisingly beautiful their stories were in comparison to their own mothers in a medicalised institution! Especially those whose families are originally from India or Africa!

Obviously there is so much evidence and science behind homebirths but somehow we have been seriously conditioned to believe we are “patients” who have “no bodily autonomy” and blindly give ourselves over to “the white coat” (or blue scrubs).

Imagine telling your great grandmothers that you were going to a place where ill people get treated, with just your husband and on a rotation of meeting strangers who hook you up, limit natural movement and even speed things up in a brightly lit room where you continue to hear other women birthing and the emergency buzzer acting like a doorbell to birth your baby?

She would be so confused as to why you would be putting yourself through that?! And I do the same when I hear someone say “I’m going to the hospital to have baby because it’s safer” 🤔

Heh?!

Those who get these lightbulb moments are just a DREAM to work with! They don’t need all the data to convince them because it just makes so much sense!

If we really needed “saving” can someone please explain how we have survived millions of years of childbirth without the medicalised approach to birth please?

In fact, some of my greatest inspiration comes from the stories my Aaji shared with me about how women were honoured, supported and cared for.

The recent Leicester maternity news has left so many parents feeling worried, angry, and unsure about what their own birth experience might look like.

And while the headlines matter, they also highlight something I’ve been talking about for years…

When maternity services are under pressure, birth can start to feel like a conveyor belt.

Not because individual midwives don’t care—they absolutely do. Many are doing an incredible job in incredibly difficult circumstances.

But when the system is stretched, appointments can feel rushed, conversations can be cut short, and it’s easy to slip into the role of being a passive patient instead of an informed decision-maker.

True story!

Her comment made me chuckle at first and I did have to reassure her that I didn’t freebirth, I had midwives and they were trained and respective of my choices.

But it’s so mad that she thought my decision was financially related- but equally that she knew birth was something to invest in.

When we spoke about money and birth she told me that although birth is all in the hospital now in India, they had recently hired a postnatal doula for my SIL in India who had been coming to support her everyday for 9 months.

Aaji is home, my aunt is home and non of the women of the house are in employment but they still hired a postnatal doula because she is an expert in caring for a new mother.

That level of looking after her great daughter- in- law without the expectation of just doing it for her made me genuinely cry.

My Aaji understood the importance of seeking expert care because it’s the best for the mother. A woman in her 80’s putting the needs of a new mother as a priority.

She is a legend! And I’m so proud to be her granddaughter who carries the same values not just as a person but in my role. Supporting, guiding and nurturing expectant and new mums is an honour.

Words matter.

Especially in birth.

The words we hear throughout pregnancy shape how we think, how we prepare and sometimes even how we experience labour.

Some words create fear.

Others create confidence.

That’s why I believe it’s worth redefining the language around birth.

✨ A birth plan isn’t about controlling every outcome.
✨ Pain isn’t something you’ve failed if you feel.
✨ Real control comes from understanding your options.
✨ Strength isn’t staying silent—it’s knowing when to ask questions and advocate for yourself.
✨ And hypnobirthing isn’t about having a “perfect” birth. It’s about preparing your mind and body so you can approach birth feeling calmer, more informed and more confident.

As a doula and hypnobirthing educator, my role isn’t to tell you what your birth should look like.

It’s to help you understand your choices, trust yourself and feel supported, no matter whatever path your birth takes.

There comes a point in pregnancy when you realise...

Buying the pram is the easy part.

Preparing for birth feels much bigger.

Not because you need to know everything.

But because you’ll be asked questions.

You’ll make decisions.

You’ll hear recommendations.

And in those moments, confidence doesn’t appear out of nowhere.

It’s built long before labour begins.

That’s why I believe birth preparation is about so much more than breathing exercises or writing a birth plan.

It’s understanding your options.

Knowing what matters to you.

Feeling able to ask, “Can we talk through that?”

And remembering that your voice belongs in every conversation about your care.

Because while you can’t control every outcome...

You can change how prepared you feel to meet whatever birth brings.

And that confidence? It stays with you long after your baby is born.

1. Being listened to isn’t a luxury. It’s a safety intervention. Too many women in Leicester, Nottingham and across England described concerns being dismissed until it was too late. Listening saves lives.

2. We recommend…” is not the same as “You have to.” Every intervention should come with clear information about benefits, risks and alternatives so you can make an informed decision.

3. Your birth preferences matter. A birth plan isn’t about controlling birth. It’s about making sure your wishes, values and informed choices are known before you’re in the middle of labour.

4. Racism and discrimination are patient safety issues. Black women and women from ethnic minority backgrounds continue to experience worse outcomes and many families described discriminatory treatment and not being taken seriously.

5. Physiological birth deserves understanding and support. When birth is progressing normally, unnecessary interruption can have consequences. Equally, when intervention becomes necessary, women deserve timely, evidence-based care and clear communication. Birth is never one-size-fits-all.

6. Consent isn’t a signature. It’s an ongoing conversation. You have the right to ask questions, ask for time where appropriate, and understand why something is being recommended.

7. The culture matters just as much as the clinical care. Multiple maternity reviews found that poor teamwork, bullying, hierarchy and fear of speaking up can directly affect the safety of mothers and babies.

8. Preparation is about more than breathing techniques. Understanding your options, common interventions, your rights and how to advocate for yourself can change your experience of birth.

9. Birth trauma should never be accepted as “just part of becoming a mother.” Many families described preventable harm and lifelong trauma. Every woman deserves compassionate, respectful and safe care.

10. The system may take time to change-but knowledge changes how you walk into it. You cannot control every outcome, but you can understand your options, recognise when something doesn’t feel right, and know that your voice matters.

Every maternity report I’ve read over the last few weeks has left me thinking the same thing.

Not that women need more fear.

Not that women need more opinions.

But that women need more preparation.

Because here’s what I know...

When labour begins, you shouldn’t be hearing phrases like “What would you like to do?” or “Here are your options...” for the very first time.

You deserve to have explored those conversations already.

Not because you can control birth.

But because preparation gives you something incredibly powerful:

Confidence.

Confidence to ask questions.

Confidence to pause.

Confidence to say, “Can you explain why?”

Confidence to know that your instincts matter too.

Birth isn’t about getting every decision “right.”

It’s about feeling like you were part of every decision that was made.

That’s why birth preparation matters so much to me.

Not because I want you to have the “perfect birth”...

But because I want you to feel strong enough to navigate the birth you will experience.

🤔 Why 🤔

Growing up, many of us were taught that being a “good girl” meant being respectful, compliant and not asking too many questions.

Then we become pregnant.

Suddenly, we’re expected to make huge decisions about our bodies and our babies… but asking “Why?” can still feel uncomfortable.

For me, asking why changed everything.

It led me to question the fear I’d grown up hearing about birth, reconnect with the wisdom my Aaji shared, and realise that informed choices aren’t about being difficult- they’re about understanding what’s right for you.

So here’s your gentle reminder…

❓You are allowed to ask questions.

🕣 You are allowed to take your time.

🤔 You are allowed to say, “I’d like to think about it.”

Because your voice deserves a place in every conversation about your care.
